Cisco is leading the style for Wi-sun interoperability | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Utilities had been sluggish to undertake IoT networking as a result of long help cycles and interoperability complexities throughout dissimilar purposes with differing network wants. Yet, more and more, they hear their utility purchasers emphasize the deserve to simplify and advocate enormous-scale outdoor networks that address an array of solutions from sapient metering and distribution automation, to claim response and renewable power integration.

At DistribuTECH, they shared how Cisco’s continuing innovation is meeting this challenge. They showcased their replete portfolio of utility trade options that consist of Cisco Resilient Mesh and their FAN routers, aim-developed to enhance interoperability. And they introduced that Cisco is the primary to obtain Wi-sun bailiwick area community (FAN) 1.0 interoperability certification for their IR509 Cisco Resilient Mesh industrial router.

Why is interoperability so vital? Let’s capture a glance.

    The problem of interoperability

usually, utilities and sapient cities ought to fulfill a variety of networking consume situations, with options from various vendors, managed through different operations agencies and even conclusion valued clientele. as an instance, an influence utility might also consume smart grid, superior Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA) networks. Interoperability becomes much more censorious in the event that they should integrate distributed energy supplies (DER), which may comprise options where they don’t maintain direct handle, corresponding to domestic photo voltaic, electric automobile charging stations, or sapient highway lighting.

First era sensible grid AMI and DA networks commonly used proprietary mesh networking technologies, partly IP-enabled and the consume of proprietary security protocols. but that continually meant security turned into much less scrutinized, much less strong, and can maintain had unknown vulnerabilities. devoid of enough interoperability, utilities had been compelled to first pick a community infrastructure dealer, and then require entire of their grid machine companies (e.g., for line sensors, meters, cap bank controllers) to combine/certify communication modules from that network dealer.

The result is a really inefficient, time- and value-intensive process for every person involved. A utility usually has to wait a very long time except the integration and bailiwick compliance is completed for entire of the grid instruments earlier than they could deploy and consume the network effectively. in the meantime, they could continue to elope diverse networks every with different verbal exchange applied sciences for distinctive functions (e.g., line sensor vs. volt-var handle) and continue to contend with excessive renovation can charge, complexity, and fragility of their methods.

Cisco IoT solutions purpose to reduce interoperability complexities with intent-based mostly networking, and back speed implementation through bringing companions together via their IoT DevNet software.

    constructing cozy and legitimate interoperability

while protection and reliability are accurate of intellect for their utility clients, interoperability tends to capture a lower back seat in conversations. Yet interoperability is vital for persisted boom in IoT – and that’s the station they are available in. Cisco is leading the pack with their IR509 router, the primary with Wi-sun FAN 1.0 interoperability certification.

Wi-sun FAN 1.0 offers for basic interoperability of instruments for network discovery, association, authentication, key exchange and rotation, encryption, RPL routing, and IPv6 address task. Wi-solar compliance is gaining consideration, and that has both network companies and gadget companies scrambling to fetch certified. With utilities enabling sapient metropolis infrastructures enjoy street lights, EV charging, and sensible parking, a host of vendors and purposes are converging on the equal community, making wider adoption of Wi-sun inevitable.

meanwhile, as Wi-solar is evolving toward FAN 2.0 necessities, Cisco is preserving tempo to live in a position. We’re continuing to travail on advanced aspects such as time distribution, adaptive information expense and modulation, peer-to-peer verbal exchange, QoS and comfy certificate re-enrollment.

Interoperability is a censorious component in attaining IoT success – and we’ll fetch you there.

Mobile operators want to provide value-added content to their subscribers in a manageable and lucrative way. Mobile developers want the license to develop the powerful mobile applications users claim with minimal roadblocks to success. Enter Android, which is a potential game-changer for the mobile development community. An innovative and open platform, Android is well positioned to address the growing needs of the mobile marketplace.

This chapter explains what Android is, how and why it was developed, and where the platform fits in to the established mobile marketplace.

To understand what makes Android so compelling, they must examine how mobile development has evolved and how Android differs from competing platforms.

    Way Back When

Remember course back when a phone was just a phone? When they relied on fixed landlines? When they ran for the phone instead of pulling it out of their pocket? When they lost their friends at a crowded ballgame and waited around for hours hoping to reunite? When they forgot the grocery list (Figure 1.1) and had to find a payphone or drive back home again?

    Figure 1.1

Figure 1.1 Mobile phones maintain become a crucial shopping accessory.

Those days are long gone. Today, commonplace problems enjoy these are easily solved with a one-button speed dial or a simple text message enjoy “WRU?” or “20?” or “Milk and?”

Our mobile phones retain us safe and connected. Nowadays, they roam around freely, relying on their phones not only to retain in paw with friends, family, and coworkers, but also to relate us where to go, what to do, and how to attain it. Even the most domestic of events appear to revolve around my mobile phone.

Consider the following true, but slightly enhanced for effect, story:

  • Once upon a time, on a warm summer evening, I was happily minding my own business cooking dinner in my unique house in pastoral unique Hampshire when a bat swooped over my head, scaring me to death.
  • The first thing I did—while ducking—was tow out my cell and ship a text message to my husband, who was across the country at the time: “There’s a bat in the house!”
  • My husband did not immediately respond (a divorce-worthy incident, I thought at the time), so I called my Dad and asked him for suggestions on how to fetch rid of the bat.
  • He just laughed.
  • Annoyed, I snapped a picture of the bat with my phone and sent it to my husband and my blog, simultaneously guilt-tripping him and informing the world of my treacherous domestic wildlife encounter.
  • Finally, I Googled “get rid of a bat” and followed the helpful do-it-yourself instructions provided on the Web for people in my situation. I also erudite that late August is when baby bats often leave the roost for the first time and learn to fly. Newly vigilant that I had a baby bat on my hands, I calmly got a broom and managed to herd the bat out of the house.
  • Problem solved—and I did it entire with the back of my trusty cell phone, the customary LG VX9800.
  • My point here? Mobile phones can decipher just about anything—and they depend on them for everything these days.

You notice that I used half a dozen different mobile applications over the course of this story. Each application was developed by a different company and had a different user interface. Some were well designed; others not so much. I paid for some of the applications, and others came on my phone.

As a user, I create the suffer functional, but not terribly inspiring. As a mobile developer, I wished for an occasion to create a more seamless and powerful application that could handle entire I’d done and more. I wanted to build a better bat trap, if you will.

Before Android, mobile developers faced many roadblocks when it came to writing applications. structure the better application, the unique application, the competing application, the hybrid application, and incorporating many common tasks such as messaging and calling in a familiar course were often unrealistic goals.

To understand why, let’s capture a brief Look at the history of mobile software development.

    “The Brick”

The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercially available cell phone. First marketed in 1983, it was 13 x 1.75 x 3.5 inches in dimension, weighed about 2.5 pounds, and allowed you to talk for a exiguous more than half an hour. It retailed for $3,995, plus hefty monthly service fees and per-minute charges.

We called it “The Brick,” and the nickname stuck for many of those early mobile phones they alternatively loved and hated. About the size of a brick, with a battery power just long enough for half a conversation, these early mobile handsets were mostly seen in the hands of traveling business execs, security personnel, and the wealthy. First-generation mobile phones were just too expensive. The service charges alone would bankrupt the mediocre person, especially when roaming.

Early mobile phones were not particularly replete featured. (Although, even the Motorola DynaTAC, shown in device 1.2, had many of the buttons we’ve approach to know well, such as the SEND, END, and CLR buttons.) These early phones did exiguous more than profile and receive calls and, if you were lucky, there was a simple contacts application that wasn’t impossible to use.

    Figure 1.2

Figure 1.2 The first commercially available mobile phone: the Motorala DynaTAC.

These first-generation mobile phones were designed and developed by the handset manufacturers. Competition was fierce and trade secrets were closely guarded. Manufacturers didn’t want to expose the internal workings of their handsets, so they usually developed the phone software in-house. As a developer, if you weren’t piece of this inner circle, you had no occasion to write applications for the phones.

It was during this term that they saw the first “time-waster” games start to appear. Nokia was illustrious for putting the 1970s video game Snake on some of its earliest monochrome phones. Other manufacturers followed, adding games enjoy Pong, Tetris, and Tic-Tac-Toe.

These early phones were flawed, but they did something important—they changed the course people thought about communication. As mobile phone prices dropped, batteries improved, and reception areas grew, more and more people began carrying these handy devices. Soon mobile phones were more than just a novelty.

Customers began pushing for more features and more games. But, there was a problem. The handset manufacturers didn’t maintain the motivation or the resources to build every application users wanted. They needed some course to provide a portal for entertainment and information services without allowing direct access to the handset.

And what better course to provide these services than the Internet?

    Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)

It turned out allowing direct phone access to the Internet didn’t scale well for mobile.

By this time, professional Web sites were replete color and chock replete of text, images, and other sorts of media. These sites relied on JavaScript, Flash, and other technologies to enhance the user suffer and were often designed with a target resolution of 800×600 pixels and higher.

When the first clamshell phone, the Motorola StarTAC, was released in 1996, it merely had a LCD 10-digit segmented display. (Later models would add a dot-matrix nature display.) Meanwhile, Nokia released one of the first slider phones, the 8110—fondly referred to as “The Matrix Phone,” as the phone was heavily used in films. The 8110 could pomp four lines of text with 13 characters per line. device 1.3 shows some of the common phone profile factors.

    Figure 1.3

Figure 1.3 Various mobile phone profile factors: the candy bar, the slider, and the clamshell.

With their postage stamp-sized low-resolution screens and limited storage and processing power, these phones couldn’t handle the data-intensive operations required by traditional Web browsers. The bandwidth requirements for data transmission were also costly to the user.

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) measure emerged to address these concerns. Simply put, WAP was a stripped-down version of HTTP, which is the backbone protocol of the Internet. Unlike traditional Web browsers, WAP browsers were designed to elope within the memory and bandwidth constraints of the phone. Third-party WAP sites served up pages written in a markup language called Wireless Markup Language (WML). These pages were then displayed on the phone’s WAP browser. Users navigated as they would on the Web, but the pages were much simpler in design.

The WAP solution was mighty for handset manufacturers. The pressure was off—they could write one WAP browser to ship with the handset and depend on developers to approach up with the content users wanted.

The WAP solution was mighty for mobile operators. They could provide a custom WAP portal, directing their subscribers to the content they wanted to provide, and rake in the data charges associated with browsing, which were often high.

Developers and content providers didn’t deliver. For the first time, developers had a casual to develop content for phone users, and some did so, with limited success.

Most of the early WAP sites were extensions of accepted branded Web sites, such as CNN.com and ESPN.com, looking for unique ways to extend their readership. Suddenly phone users accessed the news, stock market quotes, and sports scores on their phones.

Commercializing WAP applications was difficult, and there was no built-in billing mechanism. Some of the most accepted commercial WAP applications that emerged during this time were simple wallpaper and ringtone catalogues, allowing users to personalize their phones for the first time. For example, the users browsed a WAP site and requested a specific item. They filled out a simple order profile with their phone number and their handset model. It was up to the content provider to deliver an image or audio file compatible with the given phone. Payment and verification were handled through various premium-priced delivery mechanisms such as Short Message Service (SMS), Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and WAP Push.

WAP browsers, especially in the early days, were leisurely and frustrating. Typing long URLs with the numeric keypad was onerous. WAP pages were often difficult to navigate. Most WAP sites were written once for entire phones and did not account for individual phone specifications. It didn’t matter if the end-user’s phone had a Big color screen or a postage stamp-sized monochrome one; the developer couldn’t tailor the user’s experience. The result was a mediocre and not very compelling suffer for everyone involved.

Content providers often didn’t bother with a WAP site and instead just advertised SMS short codes on TV and in magazines. In this case, the user sent a premium SMS message with a request for a specific wallpaper or ringtone, and the content provider sent it back. Mobile operators generally liked these delivery mechanisms because they received a large portion of each messaging fee.

WAP fell short of commercial expectations. In some markets, such as Japan, it flourished, whereas in others, enjoy the United States, it failed to capture off. Handset screens were too tiny for surfing. Reading a sentence fragment at a time, and then waiting seconds for the next segment to download, ruined the user experience, especially because every second of downloading was often charged to the user. Critics began to convoke WAP “Wait and Pay.”

Finally, the mobile operators who provided the WAP portal (the default home page loaded when you started your WAP browser) often restricted which WAP sites were accessible. The portal allowed the operator to restrict the number of sites users could browse and to funnel subscribers to the operator’s preferred content providers and exclude competing sites. This benevolent of walled garden approach further discouraged third-party developers, who already faced difficulties in monetizing applications, from writing applications.

    Proprietary Mobile Platforms

It came as no dumbfound when users wanted more—they will always want more.

Writing robust applications such as graphic-intensive video games with WAP was nearly impossible. The 18-year-old to 25-year-old sweet-spot demographic—the kids with the disposable income most likely to personalize their phones with wallpapers and ringtones—looked at their portable gaming systems and asked for a device that was both a phone and a gaming device or a phone and a music player. They argued that if devices such as Nintendo’s Game Boy could provide hours of entertainment with only five buttons, why not just add phone capabilities? Others looked to their digital cameras, Palms, Blackberries, iPods, and even their laptops and asked the very question. The market seemed to live teetering on the edge of device convergence.

Memory was getting cheaper; batteries were getting better; and PDAs and other embedded devices were genesis to elope compact versions of common operating systems such as Linux and Windows. The traditional desktop application developer was suddenly a player in the embedded device market, especially with Smartphone technologies such as Windows Mobile, which they create familiar.

Handset manufacturers realized that if they wanted to continue to sell traditional handsets, they needed to change their protectionist policies pertaining to handset design and expose their internal frameworks, at least, to some extent.

A variety of different proprietary platforms emerged—and developers are noiseless actively creating applications for them. Some Smartphone devices ran Palm OS (now Garnet OS) and RIM Blackberry OS. Sun Microsystems took its accepted Java platform and J2ME emerged (now known as Java Micro Edition [Java ME]). Chipset maker Qualcomm developed and licensed its Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW). Other platforms, such as Symbian OS, were developed by handset manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and Samsung. The Apple iPhone OS (OS X iPhone) joined the ranks in 2008. device 1.4 shows several different phones, entire of which maintain different development platforms.

    Figure 1.4

Figure 1.4 Phones from various mobile device platforms.

Many of these platforms maintain associated developer programs. These programs retain the developer communities small, vetted, and under contractual agreements on what they can and cannot do. These programs are often required and developers must pay for them.

Each platform has benefits and drawbacks. Of course, developers admire to debate over which platform is “the best.” (Hint: It’s usually the platform we’re currently developing for.)

The truth is no one platform has emerged victorious. Some platforms are best suited for commercializing games and making millions—if your company has brand backing. Other platforms are more open and suitable for the hobbyist or vertical market applications. No mobile platform is best suited for entire viable applications. As a result, the mobile phone has become increasingly fragmented, with entire platforms sharing piece of the pie.

For manufacturers and mobile operators, handset product lines became complicated fast. Platform market penetration varies greatly by region and user demographic. Instead of choosing just one platform, manufacturers and operators maintain been forced to sell phones for entire the different platforms to compete. We’ve even seen some handsets supporting multiple platforms. (For instance, Symbian phones often also advocate J2ME.)

The mobile developer community has become as fragmented as the market. It’s nearly impossible to retain track of entire the changes in the market. Developer specialty niches maintain formed. The platform development requirements vary greatly. Mobile software developers travail with distinctly different programming environments, different tools, and different programming languages. Porting among the platforms is often costly and not straightforward. Keeping track of handset configurations and testing requirements, signing and certification programs, carrier relationships, and application marketplaces maintain become intricate spin-off businesses of their own.

It’s a nightmare for the ACME Company wanting a mobile application. Should they develop a J2ME application? BREW? iPhone? Windows Mobile? Everyone has a different benevolent of phone. ACME is forced to pick one or, worse, entire of the above. Some platforms allow for free applications, whereas others attain not. vertical market application opportunities are limited and expensive.

As a result, many wonderful applications maintain not reached their desired users, and many other mighty ideas maintain not been developed at all.

Oracle vs. SQL Server: Why Oracle wins | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Here is a brief comparison between Oracle 9i and SQL Server 2000. In my view, Oracle comes out ahead in this c...

    Platform dependency

SQL Server is only operable on the Windows platform, a major limitation for it to live an enterprise solution. Oracle is available on multiple platforms such as Windows, entire flavors of Unix from vendors such as IBM, Sun, Digital, HP, Sequent, etc. and VAX-VMS, as well as MVS. The multi-platform nature of Oracle makes it a unaffected enterprise solution.

    Locking and concurrency

SQL Server has no multi-version consistency model, which means that "writers screen readers and readers screen writers" to ensure data integrity. In contrast, with Oracle, the rule is "readers don't screen writers and writers don't screen readers." This is viable without compromising data integrity because Oracle will dynamically re-create a read-consistent image for a reader of any requested data that has been changed but not yet committed. In other words, the reader will descry the data as it was before the writer began changing it (until the writer commits). SQL Server's locking scheme is much simpler (less mature) and will result in a lot of delays/waits in a massive OLTP environment.

Also, SQL Server will escalate row locks to page flat locks when too many rows on a page are locked. This locks rows which are uninvolved in any updates for no edifying reason.

    Performance and tuning

  • In SQL Server, the DBA has no "real" control over sorting and cache memory allocation. The memory allocation is decided only globally in the server properties memory folder, and that applies for entire memory and not CACHING, SORTING, etc.
  • All pages (blocks) are always 8k and entire extents are always 8 pages (64k). This means you maintain no course to specify larger extents to ensure contiguous space for large objects.
  • No range partioning of large tables and indexes. In Oracle, a large 100 GB table can live seamlessly partitioned at the database flat into range partitions. For example, an invoice table can live partitioned into monthly partitions. Such partitioned tables and partitioned indexes give performance and maintenance benefits and are transparent to the application.
  • There is no partitioning in SQL Server.
  • There are no bitmap indexes in SQL Server.
  • There are no transpose key indexes in SQL Server.
  • There are no function-based indexes in SQL Server.
  • There is no star query optimization in SQL Server.
  • Object types

Here are some protest types missing in SQL Server that exist in Oracle.

  • You cannot declare public or private synonyms.
  • There is no such thing as independent sequence objects.
  • There are no packages; i.e., collections of procedures and functions.
  • No "before" event triggers (only "after" event triggers) and no row triggers (only statement).
  • No protest types enjoy in PL/SQL.
  • PL/SQL versus T-SQL

  • In T-SQL there are significant extensions to the ANSI SQL-92 measure which means converting applications to a different database later will live a code challenge re-write. The INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER, prerogative OUTER relate syntax differs from the classic JOIN.
  • No Java database engine as in Oracle.
  • Stored procedures in SQL Server are not compiled until executed (which means overhead, late binding and finding errors at execution time only!).
  • No skill to read/write from external files from a stored procedure.
  • PL/SQL has many DBMS system packages, where T-SQL relies only on a limited number of extended and system stored procedures in the master database.
  • PL/SQL is better in error exception handling, and there is no such thing as exceptions in T-SQL (T-SQL uses @@error -- not elegant!).
  • T-SQL does not maintain the MINUS operator, that makes finding schema differences more difficult in SQL Server.
  • In SQL Server there is no "dead connection detection". Clients who lose their connection may noiseless hold locks until a DBA is notified to murder their server side processes.
  • In SQL Server there is no such thing as SQL*NET aliases/service names! This means applications maintain to difficult code the actual server appellation into their apps, making it difficult to coast databases later to load equipoise across servers.
  • Clustering technology

In clustering technology, Oracle is light years ahead, since SQL Server has nothing enjoy Oracle Parallel Server/RAC -- two instances acting on the very data in active-active configurations. And with the unique version of Parallel Server in Oracle 9i, renamed as the Oracle real Application Clusters, there is diskless contention handling of read-read, read-write, write-read, and write-write contention between the instances. This diskless contention handling is called Cache Fusion, and it means for the first time, any application can live placed in a cluster without any changes, and it scales upwards by just adding another machine to the cluster. Microsoft has nothing enjoy this.

  • In SQL Server measure Edition there is no skill to mirror the transaction log files. In Enterprise Edition there is a log shipping process that is not so reliable.
  • If the logs fill up the disk, the database will crash hard.
  • Sometimes this requires the server itself to live rebooted.
  • Summary

SQL Server is clearly positioned between Microsoft Access and Oracle in terms of functionality, performance and scalability. It is a edifying workgroup-level solution, a very quick time to market solution, and is very simple to consume and administer. Oracle is much more advanced and has more to present for larger applications with both OLTP and data warehouse applications. Its unique clustering features are ideal for Application Service Providers (ASPs) on the Internet, who can now start with a cluster of two tiny servers and grow by just adding a server when they need to.

    Reader Feedback

Lucy L. writes: I maintain worked with both and mostly agree with the author's observations, but I would enjoy to mention the other side of this comment: "No "before" event triggers (only "after" event triggers) and no row triggers (only statement)." In SQL server, the statement-level trigger gives you access to the pseudo-tables INSERTED and DELETED. This means you can effect an action for each row operated on in a setwise mode rather than in the row-at-a-time mode you must consume in Oracle. This is a much better deal in bulk operations where an Oracle row-level trigger can consume up much of the performance edge of bulk inserts or updates.

Balaji S. writes: I deem it is fundamentally wrong to compare SQL Server with Oracle. I agree with entire the points mentioned in the article. Oracle is a more age and advanced product than SQL Server. Also, I personally faced a problem when they implemented a CRM application over SQL Server. I was told that SQL Server has a restrict on the size of the row and that if the row is greater than a unavoidable size, then you need to split the row and insert into two tables with parent child relationship. This happened about a year back and I am not certain whether it is fixed or not. The company tried to migrate their CRM from Oracle to SQL Server but only ended up spending millions to find out that it is not going to work. They are continuing with Oracle now.

Harvinder S. writes: I create your article very informative. Here are some observations:

    1) Quote: "Also, SQL Server will escalate row locks to page flat locks when too many rows on a page are locked." From my understanding, SQL Server never escalates row flat lock to page flat lock. It will aquire page/row lock at the genesis and escalate to table flat lock if needed.

    2) Quote: "In T-SQL there are significant extensions to the ANSI SQL-92 measure which means converting applications to a different database later will live a code challenge re-write. The INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER, prerogative OUTER relate syntax differs from the classic JOIN." I find these extensions to live very profitable for writing efficient code.

    3) I totally agree that SQL Server should maintain the following features:

  • Minus
  • Partitioning
  • Indexes - bitmap, function-based, etc
  • Better error handling
  • Better locking mechanism
  • I hope the next article will live point to SQL Server's advantages over Oracle.

Patrick M. writes: absolute dribble. Clearly the author is an Oracle bigot. For someone that is certified in MS, he certain did fetch some major items wrong about MS-SQL. Clearly he develops with Oracle and has only played with SQL Server, otherwise he would know better.

  • Stored procs are compiled in MS-SQL.
  • A feedback from another writer clarifies the before trigger issue (which is my basis for stating he doesn't actually consume MS-SQL).
  • Stating that migrating a db from system A to system B is hindered by T-SQL is absurd. That is the least of the issues. If you are poignant to another db, you will definitely maintain huge issues just with the table designs. Lastly, no one puts a gun to your head to consume the MS extensions – MS-SQL supports ANSI-92 (this is my basis for stating he is an Oracle bigot – it's a reaching dispute to further his bias). Let me capture this further, he states in Oracle you can consume java and read-write to external files, something you cannot attain in MS-SQL, I dare ask, is this ANSI-92 compliant?
  • The lifeless connection detection feature works the very in SQL and Oracle –- they both suck. How attain I know, they elope both servers in production environments.
  • I will concede him that @@error is not elegant enjoy unaffected error handling. I am at a loss to recall if the error handling in PL/SQL is ANSI-92 compliant.
  • There ARE packages of procedure in SQL (as for functions, I attain not know). This further proves he does not consume MS-SQL.
  • You can horizontally partition data in MS-SQL.
  • Why he defines enterprise as being able to elope on multiple platforms is beyond me. Once you maintain the server to elope the software, it's a mute point.
  • As for some of the eclectic features he lists for Oracle –- I am inquisitive what of those features he uses today in most of his environments. Just because I can capture control over the most minuscule factor of Oracle doesn't imply I should. What makes me deem I am smarter than the many person-years gone into the server algorithms that retain memory allocation in check?
  • I probably could proceed on, but you fetch the point. This article was a MS-SQL bashing article, not a "differences" article. I find it statistically impossible that MS-SQL doesn't attain ANYTHING better than Oracle.

Santosh B. writes: I watch to agree with the reader review of Patrick M. Oracle is a powerful system but SQL is very powerful too and the author has got some things totally wrong. My points are:

    1) You can attain any sort of writing to and reading from external files , communicate with external apps everything by using external stored procedures. So these are com objects and dlls. but so what ? If you can consume java to attain this in oracle, you can consume ext stored procs in TSQL.

    2) My understanding is that LEFT OUTER relate etc are ANSI standards! And Oracle has only now started supporting this. It makes coding so much more elegant especially when writing dynamic stored procedures.

    3) Has the author not heard of Enterprises that elope Microsoft platform? attain they not successfully consume SQL Server? Hasn't SQL Server consistently topped entire benchmarks?

    4) The SQL system is capable of tuning at low levels if you need to and in any case you need more knobs in Oracle since it caters to different platforms. The absence or presence of 100 tunable features doesn't in itself profile for a better database.

    5) Partitioning is viable in SQL server and there are features enjoy Distributed Partitioning.

    6) Sequence objects are not an ANSI measure anyway. And besides, Oracle doesn't maintain IDENTITY properties for columns.

    7) Who needs SQLNETtype connectivity really? They can attain the very by using ODBC DSN names and in .NET you consume config files. You don't need to change your code.

    8) Can he prove that Log Shipping is not reliable? Ok.. so 9i RAC is very powerful. I accept that, but instead of dismissing SQL's solutions, he'd better prove it.

This wasn't a comparison. More enjoy a rant...

Earl C. writes: I absolutely agree that Oracle is superior to SQL Server in the course that a Rolls Royce is superior to my Nissan Sentra. So why am I not driving a Rolls Royce? I guess the reply to that one is that I cannot afford a Rolls Royce and I attain not need a Rolls Royce for my trips to Wal-Mart. My point is that for most companies and most databases SQL Server is edifying enough. I only wish that Oracle offered a much cheaper version of their product with fewer advanced features. By the way, OEM 9i is course better than SQL Server Enterprise Manager but of course you must attain some travail to set up OEM.

Andy W. writes: I've worked with both SQL Server (yes, the most current stable version) and Oracle 9i. Attempts at comparison is pointless: It's enjoy comparing exiguous league baseball to the major leagues.

There simply is no course to rationalize away the platform dependency issue with SQL Server. Folks that attempt to attain so, only emphasize their prejudice for the MS platform and maintain exiguous regard for TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and ROI (Return on Investment) issues that confront IT management, especially in the cost conscious and competitive marketplace they countenance today.

Don't live overly concerned about the differences in the features, implementation and robustness of the two databases. SQL Server is a green and immature product that eventually will nigh the gap. What you are investing in is a long-term vendor relationship and you must study very carefully entire aspects of that relationship, including licensing, support, standards compliance and portability. Migrating to a unique RDBMS is an extremely difficult and expensive process and essentially means you made the wrong choice. Technology exists to serve the business, and watchful analysis of current and future business requirements should live the primary consideration when evaluating database technologies.

Don B. writes: Loved the article! I'm lighthearted that this doughty DBA has the guts to converse the truth against the Microsoft vaporware.

Bob S. writes: Having worked with MS SQL Server and Oracle and knowing that each maintain strengths and weaknesses, I'm surprised the author used such flimsy arguments for Oracle and against MS SQL Server. Also, some of the feedback lacks real insight.

Consider the author's pretension that Oracle has packages and SQL Server does not. Oracle uses packages with their PL/SQL software. They are wrappers for procedures but maintain more significance than just being wrappers as the header and cadaver of the package is designed much the very course an Ada package is created and used. SQL Server does not maintain this. They consume the term differently. Both author and responders are talking past each other.

Personally, I enjoy Oracle better for most DB applications. However, SQL Server is so effortless to travail with, especially for smaller databases. Backup and recovery is a breeze. Oracle is a Cadillac of RDBMS. For large (100+ GB) databases I cannot imagine trying to effect a recovery on anything less than with an Oracle platform. PL/SQL is a much better language for developing SQL applications. Also, the exception is great. Locking strategy is better for massive applications. However, Oracle is over-kill for a lot of smaller applications. The real key for most business's is that they need to know there information requirements. If your information requirements are small, don't consume your time on using Oracle. If your information requirements are greater than this and you want the capability of being able to consume either Win2k or Unix, stick with Oracle. It's that simple.

All of this talk about who is better than the other or who has what is a lot of wasted air. Both attain a edifying job. As for the author, gladden research these matters out before making bold statements that are really not completely accurate. Your prejudice really clouds the picture for the non-informed.

Roger P. writes: I agree with Patrick -- this is purely SQL bashing and doesn't loom to live any profile of attempt at a real comparison.

Locking and Concurrency - stating that SQL Server's locking architecture is less age is incorrect. The locking architecture is designed to process requests faster, as is evident by the TPC benchmarks (www.tpc.org), and is different than how Oracle handles it, so what?

"SQL Server's locking scheme is much simpler (less mature) and will result in a lot of delays/waits in a massive OLTP environment." It's a poor craftsman that blames his tools. I wager I could capture that environment and resolve any of those delay/wait issues through code or schema changes or even server configuration. Maintaining locks on objects is piece of keeping transactions atomic in any dB environment. Row to page to table escalation reduces resource utilization overhead from trying to manage too many locks. If locks are an issue you should try running more frequent commits. In Oracle when a lock is encoutered the transaction goes through the log looking for the terminal known edifying value. The implications of this are a query could certainly recur a result set that was not expected if instead it had waited for the current lock/update/insert to complete. It's entire a matter of how you view this. There are pros and cons on either side.

Oracle costs more than twice as much and isn't as feature loaded for the foundation cost. For example, out-of-the box SQL Server provides tools to operate in a heterogenous environment. Oracle charges noiseless more for those tools after you pay the foundation cost. Then they noiseless freight more for maintenance. Microsoft provides entire of their updates free of charge.

SQL Server does not require downtime for any nature of backups. Despite what the writer says, log shipping is an extremely inexpensive and dependable means of replicating data to a standby server. Scriping a DCL process in the measure edition for log shipping is a simple task as well.

"In SQL Server, the DBA has no "real" control over sorting and cache memory allocation. The memory allocation is decided only globally in the server properties memory folder, and that applies for entire memory and not CACHING, SORTING, etc." Microsoft's goal here is to profile these systems more self tuning and less recumbent to human error. This means that some things are not available to the DBA to change. In the writer's specimen he also mentions page and extent size, I'd counter that in SQL you don't maintain to worry about data fragmentation any more as the kernel manages and mantains this. As future releases approach out this will become more and more evident. Managing database properites in ASCII files is archaic, theme to error and inconsistencies and is, in unpretentious terms, the wrong course to elope things.

"SQL Server is clearly positioned between Microsoft Access and Oracle in terms of functionality, performance and scalability." Puh-lease! It wasn't even until the release of 9i that Oracle started taking a solemn Look at management features. The only performance edge Oracle has had was on the 64-bit platform and that edge is now gone. SQL Server is faster, takes fewer DBAs to support, costs less, offers more robust tools and features that directly contribute to a company's bottom line than Oracle does. Oracle features and it's pricing model contribute only to Oracle's bottom line.

"In SQL Server there is no such thing as SQL*NET aliases/service names! This means applications maintain to difficult code the actual server appellation into their apps, making it difficult to coast databases later to load equipoise across servers." Acquaint yourself with NetLib or you could even alias at the DNS server. In any case, at the very least if you're having to difficult code server names instead of using a registry or some profile of properties file and making this a variable in the app these coding habits leave something to live desired anyway.

"In SQL Server there is no "dead connection detection". Clients who lose their connection may noiseless hold locks until a DBA is notified to murder their server side processes." I've seen the very issues in Oracle, this depends more on the application touching the dB than the specific database vendor.

@@error is a system defined variable to hold the terminal error and is by no means the only system of trapping and handling exceptions in SQL Server.

Off the soap box for now. :)

David H. writes: I agree with the feedback that asserted this was not a comparison but a SQL Server bashing exercise. I maintain some suffer with PL/SQL and None with SQL Server, and was interested to learn the the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two systems. This articale has not achieved that. It is only half an article.

Seetharaman S. writes: For two days before reading this, I was thinking about exactly the very thing. Surprised to descry this today. I maintain worked and am working on Oracle and SQL databases and I find it difficult to handle SQL databases when the size of the DB goes beyond 4-8 GB. Even indexes are not efficient. They attain a monthly process that initially takes 3 hours to complete. Subsequently after running it for two more months, it is taking something around 7 hours to 18 hours. Not joking at all, they tried again and again for the very month before restarting the system. They did and finally it took 3 hours and 39 mins. The DBAs job with respect to SQL Server is bit difficult and at times was not able to reply where and what goes wrong. The other day, I had problem with the SQL server Agent and I create out that it was related to the DTS and NT Fibers option. On another occassion, during installation, using the control panel, I removed the SQL server and restarted more than 10 times. Finally, I realized that some parameter in the registry had a '1' value so that I was not able to effect a fresh installation. Also, while processing cubes, as you said, when they collect huge data, it locks the select statement triggered in some other connectivity. Although SQL Server has mighty user-friendly screens and installation advancements, it lacks Enterprise Puree, which is nowadays in demand.

Scott T. writes: I agree with Patrick M that this is absolute SQL Server bashing and is far too one-sided to live taken seriously. I deem myself as an Oracle DBA and agree with some of the comments, but there are few details about which features are better in SQL Server than Oracle other than the summary provided. To add to Patrick's comments/corrections, you *can* alias SQL Servers via DNS so applications don't need to maintain the server appellation "hard coded".

I would enjoy Eli to define why he considers Oracle better than SQL Server "for both OLTP and data warehouse applications" when SQL Server holds nearly every tpc benchmark, both clustered and non-clustered? M$'s best endeavor is about 709K vs Oracle's best endeavor of about 428K, and Oracle is about $3 per transaction more expensive in these configurations!! also he fails to mention that although Oracle clustering technology is good, it also costs lots of $$$ through its licensing scheme.

Joe Y. writes: Are you certain the author isn't an Oracle employee? I've been an Oracle DBA, SQL DBA, and am now playing with other stuff, including an spicy toy called MySQL. The author responds: As a DBA in both Oracle and SQL Server, I tried in this article to find entire the things that exist in Oracle but not in SQL Server. Oracle surely has more functionality and is more age than MS SQL Server but there are some points in favour of SQL Server:

    1) Self-tuning, with update statistics checked and auto create statistics.

    2) User functions that can operate also as parametric views

    3) Insert...Exec stored procedure format that Oracle does not maintain with the INSERT statement

    4) Identity column

    5) Very intuitive learning; i.e., it's easier to learn than Oracle.

    6) Linked servers are really much easier to implement than external procedures in Oracle.
